Architectural Aluminium Windows for Melbourne Homes
Window Society was founded on a straightforward observation: Melbourne's premium residential market deserved a window supplier that operated at the same level as the architects and builders it served. Not a volume supplier offering standard sizes from a catalogue. A specialist that understood the relationship between glazing performance, architectural intent, and how a home actually feels to live in.
Every system we supply is custom-manufactured to the exact dimensions of the project. Nothing is off-the-shelf, nothing is adapted from a standard size. The result is a fit that performs as the specification intends, thermally, acoustically, and aesthetically.
What Thermally Broken Double Glazing Actually Means
Standard aluminium is one of the most thermally conductive building materials in common use. An untreated aluminium frame transfers heat and cold almost as freely as no frame at all, which is why single-glazed aluminium windows, still found in the majority of Melbourne's existing housing stock, perform so poorly in winter and summer alike.
A thermally broken frame solves this at the source. A continuous polyamide barrier is integrated inside the aluminium profile, physically separating the exterior and interior sections of the frame. This interrupts the heat flow path through the metal, reducing thermal conductivity by over 1,000 times compared to standard aluminium. Combined with double or triple glazing, two or three panes of glass with an insulating argon gas cavity between them, the result is a window that genuinely insulates.
Our SoTherm systems achieve U-values between 1.6 and 2.4 W/m²K depending on specification. A standard single-glazed aluminium window sits around 6.0 W/m²K. In Melbourne's climate, that difference is felt immediately and every day.
Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing: Which Is Right for Your Project
For most Melbourne residential projects, thermally broken double glazing is the right specification. It delivers substantial thermal and acoustic performance gains over single glazing, suits the majority of architectural applications, and represents the best value for performance in our climate zone.
Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second gas cavity, reducing U-values further and increasing acoustic attenuation. It's the right choice for homes in higher-altitude or colder regions of Victoria, for rooms with significant noise exposure, or for projects targeting 7-star and above energy ratings. The additional weight requires structural consideration, and the premium over double glazing is meaningful, typically 20 to 30% on the glazing component.
We'll advise on the right specification for your project during the consultation. In most inner and bayside Melbourne applications, well-specified double glazing outperforms what most homeowners expect and matches what the architecture requires.
Who We Work With
Window Society works with three distinct client types and our process is tailored to each. We also work with boutique builders on new build projects across Melbourne and Victoria.
Homeowners replacing existing windows come to us primarily through frustration with cold rooms, condensation, noise, or windows that simply look dated against a recently renovated interior. We manage the entire process from measurement through to installation, with a single point of contact throughout.
Boutique builders working on 2 to 20 new build projects per year value reliable supply, consistent quality, and a supplier that understands how windows fit into a broader construction programme. We work to builder timelines, provide shop drawings for approval, and deliver custom systems that don't require site adaptation.
Architects and designers specifying for premium residential projects need a supplier that can execute the glazing vision without compromise, whether that's ultra-slim sightlines for a contemporary extension, custom powder coat to match a facade palette, or curved glazing for an architectural statement. Our manufacturing capability handles all of it.
Melbourne's Climate and Why Window Specification Matters
Melbourne's climate is genuinely demanding on building envelopes in a way that mild coastal cities are not. The combination of cold winters, hot summers, and rapid temperature swings, sometimes 20 degrees in a single day, means windows are working hard in both directions across the same year.
Under-specified windows don't just affect comfort. They directly increase heating and cooling loads, which means higher energy bills, a harder-working HVAC system, and a home that never quite reaches the comfort level it should. For new builds targeting NatHERS energy ratings, the glazing specification is one of the highest-leverage decisions in the entire project.
For renovation and replacement projects, upgrading from single to thermally broken double glazing is typically the single highest-impact improvement available to an existing home, more impactful than insulation upgrades, more impactful than HVAC changes, and more durable than either.
Servicing Melbourne and Regional Victoria
Our projects span Melbourne's inner suburbs, middle ring, bayside corridor, and outer metropolitan areas. We work regularly across the inner east including Toorak, Hawthorn, Kew, Malvern, Armadale, Camberwell and Glen Iris, as well as bayside suburbs including Brighton, Sandringham, Elsternwick and Bentleigh. We service the full metropolitan area without suburb limitations.
Regional Victoria projects are a growing part of our work. Homes in higher-altitude areas including the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley, and the hills east of Melbourne have particularly strong cases for thermally broken triple glazing given the temperature differentials they experience. We deliver and install across regional Victoria and can discuss logistics as part of the initial consultation.
If you're planning a new build, renovation, or window replacement anywhere in Melbourne or Victoria, the starting point is a conversation. We'll give you an honest view of the right specification for your project and what it will cost before you commit to anything.
